His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s teachings and royal duties are a perfect example of simplicity and sufficiency. His Majesty is a great inspiration and a proof of “less is more”.
His Majesty had introduced sufficiency economy for more than 30 years. The philosophy reminds us to reduce unnecessary spending. It does not mean to deprive oneself completely of luxury – rather, it means the acquisition of that luxury must not cause trouble for others, and must be based on one’s capability. Speak sufficiently. Act sufficiently. This is the key to happiness of the country. Thailand might not be the wealthiest country, but it should aim to be the most secure and peaceful country, because peace is hard to come by in this world.
His Majesty had also taught that sometimes doing good could be against our inner needs, and it takes a long time to see results. However, we must keep doing good and avoid doing bad things. This is in line with Buddhist teachings. If we do good things and help each other, Thailand will grow steadily, and the people will be happy.
Regarding unity, His Majesty had taught that unity and contributing to the country’s strength through kindness and honesty would result in true prosperity of the nation. Unity does not mean the people cannot have different views; rather, it means they should make use of different views. Thinking of the country’s benefit will result in peace and happiness.
These are just some of His Majesty’s teachings. There are countless more that we can follow and practice in order to achieve simple happiness in our everyday life.
